Sister Wives stars Christine and Kody Brown’s relationship ended in November 2021. The two had been married since 1994; however, they weren’t legally married but committed to each other spiritually. Then, they expanded their family and became parents of Aspyn, Mykelti, Paedon, Gwendlyn, Ysabel, and their youngest child, Truely.

Christine was Kody’s third wife; the couple split soon after the tension increased amongst Kody’s other wives.

Recently, Christine sued her ex-husband for child support and her 14-year-old daughter’s custody. As per the In Touch Weekly September 19, 2024 article, the lawsuit was filed by Christine on Monday, September 16, 2024.

According to those legal documents, her daughter Truely doesn’t have Kody’s name mentioned on her birth certificate. Both Kody and Christine used to live in Utah, where for polygamous families, fathers are not mentioned on the birth certificate. The purpose of this lawsuit is for the Sister Wives star Christine to establish paternity for her daughter as well as wanting child support.

This news, however, is not a surprise to the TLC show fans, as Christine has hinted at Kody’s lack of involvement in her children’s lives. Apart from that, Kody is known to have a strained or distant relationship with his other children as well, as claimed by his wives. During the October 15, 2023 episode of the reality TV series, Christine shared how she wanted to “preserve” her daughter’s relationship with her dad by moving to Utah from Flagstaff. She said:

“When I lived in Flagstaff, I firmly believed that moving to Utah was the best choice for me and for Truely. I knew that I was taking Truely away from her dad. I felt like the best way to preserve Truely’s relationship with Kody was to move her away from him.”

According to the Sister Wives cast member, moving to Utah was a way to “freeze” Kody and Truely’s connection while it “was still good.” Kody, on the other hand, couldn’t understand the reason behind this statement; he shared that it was “BS rationalization” for Christine to take away his daughter from him. Kody Brown said:

“For Christine to think that she’s saving my relationship with Truely by taking her away from me and just ‘preserving’ it — that’s such B.S. rationalization.”

The legal documents also mention a domestic relations injunction request. Kody or Christine are not allowed to engage in domestic violence or harassment against one another. This injunction also prevents them from taking the children somewhere without court orders.

This also meant that the Sister Wives stars Kody and Christine might have to co-parent and make a unanimous decision if it’s linked to Truely. Both parents will have to be involved in the decision-making process rather than one taking charge of it.

“I took their relationship while it was still good and I picked it up and I moved it. And then whenever we come back into town, I just pick it up again and I move it back.”

Fans can expect to hear an update on this lawsuit and what Kody’s response would be like. Whether this situation will be addressed in this season or not is unclear. Sister Wives season 19 episodes air every week on Sundays at 10/9c exclusively on TLC. Viewers can follow Kody and Christine Brown on their official Instagram account.
