General Hospital: How Kelly Monaco’s firing could be connected to Lulu Spencer’s dire need for a liver donor
Kelly Monaco’s time on General Hospital seems to be dwindling as her character Sam McCall is a match for Lulu, who needs a new liver. In August, Kelly’s shocking exit was announced
As Sam McCall has been confirmed to be a donor for Lulu Spencer on General Hospital, the end appears to get closer and closer for Kelly Monaco.
The actress was announced to be departing the show and her character would be killed off this fall. It is not known exactly when or how, but with the evident storyline with Sam as she is a confirmed donor for Lulu (now being played by Alexa Havins), is providing a clue fans are dreading.
In the last few months, Kelly has written – then deleted – several social media comments calling out the show for their decision that is still unclear. The soap star shared in a now-deleted post on October 6 about filming her last scene and how it was not making “any sense.” Fans have made petitions, created their own hashtag (I Stand With Kelly Monaco) as well as purchasing a billboard Phoenix truck and sending it to ABC’s Prospect Studio where they film the daytime drama to demand that Kelly stays.

Kelly Monaco’s Firing
The news of Kelly’s firing was first reported by Soap Opera Network. At the time before the news was confirmed, they said that the writers were going to kill her off this fall and that the soap star was “blindsided” by the decision. For a while, the 48-year-old did not respond. In a since-deleted response on Instagram, she finally broke her silence on October 1.
There were rumors flying around for the reason for her exit and one of those reasons was that she rejected a pay cut. On a Soap Hub Instagram post, a user wrote: “What do you got concrete in your head she wasn’t fired she didn’t take the pay cut so she had to leave.”
Kelly hit back at the user stating that her firing had nothing to do with that and was an act of “retaliation.”
“‘No primary role’.. do your homework. When Billy Miller was fired, Sam’s storyline stopped. Stripping Sam of every characteristic she had,” she wrote, referring to the late Billy Miller who played Jason Morgan/Drew Cain.
“Something I worked for decades to build… Slowly dismantling her, into a character that I did not recognize, let alone the audience. Call it what you will… retaliation at it [sic] finest. I will give a proper statement. The truth will set you free.” she continued.
The in a deleted post made on October 6, she shared a behind the scenes photo of her with her soap mother and sisters: Nancy Lee Grahn (Alexis Davis), Kate Mansi (Kristina Corinthos-Davis) and Kristen Vaganos (Molly Lansing Davis). She captioned the post “Last scene with the Davis girls. Still doesn’t make any sense to me.”

Lulu’s Donor Storyline
On General Hospital, Lulu is currently suffering from cirrhosis of the liver due to her coma, therefore, she needs a new liver. They have been looking for a match for Lulu, with Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson) seemed poised to be the donor at first as he made his grand return on the show since 2015. Lucky was being held in Somalia, and imprisoned by a man named Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota). Lucky was brought back home to Port Charles with the help of Jason Morgan (Steve Burton) and Anna Devane (Finola Hughes), who went to the African country.
Lucky ended up not being a match and was heartbroken as well as angry. From that moment on especially with the news of Kelly’s firing, fans assumed that the next possible person was going to be Sam and they predicted correctly. Terry Randolph (Cassandra James) told Sam she was a match but would need to undergo another screening to confirm that there are no complications. Sam said she would agree to testing on one condition that Terry does not inform Dante Falconeri (Dominic Zamprogna) until it’s confirmed.
Sam ended up telling Dante and then they told Rocco Falconeri (Finn Francis Carr) and Danny (Asher Antonyzyn) and Scout Quartermaine (Cosette Abinante). Rocco is Dante’s child with Lulu. Danny is Sam’s child with Jason, while Scout is Sam’s child with Drew.
As fans wait to see how this storyline will pan out for Sam and how she will end up meeting her demise, Kelly has played the fan-favorite former bad girl for 21 years and in over 2,000 episodes. In 2006, she received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her work on GH.
