Doug Sheehan Dead: The ‘Knots Landing’ Star Was 75

Douglas (Doug) Sheehan, who joined the cast of the long-running drama Knots Landing in 1983 as Ben Gibson, Valene’s (Joan Van Ark) eventual new husband, has died. Sheehan passed away at his home in Big Horn, Wyoming on June 29. He was 75. No cause of death was announced.

Born on April 27, 1949 in Santa Monica, California, Sheehan bowed on television in guest spots on the dramas Charlie’s Angels and Kaz in 1979. His first major role was as Joe Kelly on the daytime soap opera General Hospital from 1979 to 1982.

Following small roles in the theatricals 10 (1979) and Victor/Victoria (1982), and additional guest appearances in the primetime comedies Alice and Cheers, Sheehan segued into Knots Landing as Valene’s new love interest. Sheehan’s Ben Gibson, of course, never had a chance of a long-term commitment from Val, who was still smitten with her former husband, Gary Ewing (Ted Shackelford), who she had already married twice (and did for a third time following Ben and Sam Behrens as psychopath Danny Waleska).

Sheehan spent five seasons on Knots Landing and then headlined the two-season NBC sitcom Day By Day from 1988-89.

Sheehan also replaced Michael Lerner on the sitcom Clueless, based on the movie of the same name, from 1997-99. He appeared in four TV films through the course of his career (including Crash: The Mystery of Flight 1501 and A Mom For Christmas in 1990). And his final acting role, according to IMBD, was in an episode of the comedy What I Like About You in 2003.
