General Hospital star Tabyana Ali takes Trina through the grieving process
Trina Robinson is not over losing Spencer on General Hospital, and Tabyana Ali explains why.
General Hospital’s Trina Robinson has been doing her best to move on with her life without Spencer Cassadine since February by throwing herself into work and friends — while not truly processing her loss.
Spencer and Esme plunged into the Seine after Esme drugged Spencer, and both were presumed dead. Trina returned to Port Charles after giving up on art school in Paris and resumed her job at Ava’s art gallery. She plans to return to school in the fall and just moved into her first apartment with Josslyn Jacks. Life seemed to be going along fine until Josslyn found something that tugged at Trina’s heartstrings.
The turtle dove that Victor gave Spencer to gift Trina for Christmas in 2022 never made it to her until months later. When Spencer finally presented Trina with the ornament, she was overcome with emotion. Seeing the dove again brought all those memories flooding back, and Trina was plunged into despair all over again.
“It feels like it’s hard for her to build herself back up when things keep seeming so familiar, like Spencer is still around or he’s still near and it feels like he’s always trying to talk to her in some form of fashion,” Tabyana Ali told Soap Opera Digest.
Trina has spent time at Spencer’s grave and discussed her feelings with Aunt Stella, but for the most part, she has tried to bury them and pretend everything was fine. However, Ali realizes that grief can come in spurts at the most unexpected times, especially when it comes with survivor’s guilt.
“There is an immense amount of guilt behind that, where it’s like, ‘How can I even live day to day knowing that you sacrificed yourself, and now you don’t get to do all the things I get to do in my day to day life?'” Ali mused. “She’s trying to move on, but there are all these little things that keep popping up that remind her of Spencer and it’s like a rock going through a glass window.”
Josslyn harkened to her own experience with grief, reminding Trina that grief could last forever, but it got easier over time. It’s not what Trina wants to hear but it’s her reality.
In the end, Ali is glad that GH hasn’t rushed Trina into a new romance. Instead, she has remained single, and Ali understands why.
“They were soulmates. So you can’t rush something like that, you can’t just get over it quickly,” Ali said. “This is something that builds and it takes time to get over, to visually see your soulmate die. Even as myself, as Tabyana, I feel like I would need so many years to get over that. I wouldn’t even probably entertain the thought of being with anybody else for a minute.”
